HU Wellbeing Day | Selfcare

  • Thu 22 May 10:30 - 15:00
  • Botanic Gardens
  • free (after registration)
  • Podium x Student Support Centre

Studying is more than just attending lectures and passing exams – it’s about juggling a part-time job, group projects, social activities, making choices, and sometimes not knowing where to begin. It’s no wonder your mind can get overloaded. That’s why it’s important to take a moment to pause, check in with yourself, and ask: How are you really doing?

During the HU Wellbeing Day, it’s all about self-care – what do you need to take care of yourself in a society that demands so much from you, both mentally and physically? It’s a chance to recharge, try something new, or simply step away from the chaos for a bit.

Since self-care means different things to different people, the programme is diverse: from an intense boxing clinic to help you feel and push your limits, to a silence walk through the Botanic Gardens, where you can embrace the peace and quiet. There’s also a creative workshop where you’ll reflect on the connection between your body and your surroundings through drawing and painting.

Self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all. This day gives you the space to discover what works for you – whether it’s physical movement, taking a moment to reflect, or being with others.

13:30 | Workshop drawing/painting

Did you know that you can connect more with your body through artistic expression? In this workshop, inspired by Winti, a Surinamese religion, artist Faisel Saro will take you on a journey of self-discovery. Faisel will guide you in exploring the layers within yourself and investigating how your body and environment are interconnected. During the workshop, you’ll engage in various drawing and painting exercises that will help you visually capture this connection. Faisel will share his unique approach to art, where spiritual and ritual traditions from Suriname play an important role.

13:30 | Silence walk

In a student life full of stimuli, it’s nice to take a moment to unwind. And that’s possible, even on the busy campus of Utrecht Science Park! During the walk, you’ll explore the blooming Botanic Gardens in silence. This experience helps you focus entirely on the present moment, allowing you to relax and pay more attention to yourself. The walk includes moments of meditation, short exercises, and of course, plenty of time to enjoy the peace, the beautiful plants, trees, and pathways around you. We’ll spend a total of 1.5 hours immersing ourselves in nature. The silent walk will be guided by Joris Verhees, mindfulness trainer at the Student Support Centre. You don’t need to bring anything – we’ll provide ponchos or umbrellas if the weather calls for it.

HU is here for you

The HU Wellbeing Day is part of HU’s goal to ensure that everyone feels at home here. Feeling at home, being sufficiently challenged, and receiving extra support when you need it: these factors impact how you’re doing and how you experience your studies. HU is here for you, to work with you to ensure that you can navigate your studies in the best way possible.

Accessibility

The day’s program includes both English- and Dutch-language sessions. The Serre and the Educational Lab of the Botanical Gardens are close to each other but quite far from the main entrance, about a 10-minute walk through the beautiful garden. For those who can’t manage this, it’s possible to enter through the back entrance; view the map here. There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet available. Do you have special needs or requests? We’re happy to discuss the options with you. Please contact us at podium@hu.nl.
