On Thursday, October 9th, we’ll be joining the Diversity & Inclusion Network for a special edition of Food Club. The event is part of Diversity Day (October 7th), which this year focuses on intersectionality—that is, the different layers that shape how we experience inequality and privilege.
A complex concept perhaps, but you can think of it this way: every person is a soup. Everyone’s soup consists of ingredients such as ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social background, income, education, religion, or physical and mental abilities. Some ingredients confer more privileges, others make life more difficult because they can lead to discrimination. These ingredients are not independent of each other: they constantly influence and reinforce each other. Intersectionality is precisely about those intersections—how the combination of all these layers of identity determines how you experience opportunities, obstacles, and power relations.
And you even see this reflected in the kitchen and at the table:
🥦 For some, buying organic vegetables is a given, for others, unaffordable.
🍣 Dishes, flavors, or smells that were once considered “strange” or “inconvenient” are now suddenly hip and happening because they are now embraced by the dominant culture.
🍴 Whether you eat with a knife and fork, chopsticks, or your hands – it says something about your background and how you are perceived.
These are examples that will make you look at “the norm” from a different perspective. Because who actually determines that?
During this Food Club, we’ll literally explore all of this through our plates. Cooking and eating together is the starting point for a conversation that goes beyond the kitchen – about identity, inequality, and connection. In short: plenty to chew on together. Will you join us
